3 Tips For Relieving a Dry Nose

by Patti S. Wednesday, November 16th 2011

As winter approaches, the inside lining of your nose is more likely to become dry due to low humidity and increased use of household heaters. You probably notice that people experience sinusitis, chronic nasal congestion, and nosebleeds more often when the weather turns colder.

The mucosal lining in your nose is very thin and fragile, and dry air can cause the lining to crack and fissure. When this happens, the nose dries out and the mucous becomes thick and vulnerable to infections.

Fortunately, there are some easy solutions for preventing and treating a dry nose.

Tip 1: Turn down the heat

Add an extra layer of clothing and turn down the furnace.

Tip 2: Get humid

Take a hot shower and allow the bathroom to fill up with steam. A humidifier also helps keep the air around you moist.

Tip 3: Moisten nasal passages

Sinus rinse with a neti pot helps remove dried secretions and filters out dust and particles from the nose. Using a neti pot can also help restore moisture, allowing you to efficiently blow your nose.
