Treating and Preventing the Winter Sniffles: AAFA's Mike Tringale Gives Helpful Tips

by Mike Tringale, M.S.M., vice president of external affairs at the AAFA, January 6th 2012

Over 50 million Americans suffer from allergies each year. While many think allergies are just a spring or fall affliction, winter can also be a problematic time of the year for families dealing with allergies, when allergy symptoms can be commonly mistaken as cold symptoms. To help get through your winter sniffles, the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA) has a few easy tips to consider.

As the days get shorter and colder, Americans spend more time indoors, so it's recommend that you improve your indoor air quality. Some simple tips include:

  • Control dust mites by keeping surfaces wiped down and reducing clutter
  • Use a SinuSense™ sinus wash daily to rinse the nasal passages and keep them clear of allergens
  • Vacuum once or twice weekly
  • Use a HEPA air filter in rooms
  • Prevent air dander

The holidays can also present some unique challenges for sufferers during the winter:

  • Remove wet dirt and leaves from around the foundation and gutters of your house to prevent outdoor mold from accumulating
  • Stack all firewood outside, bringing new logs in only for immediate use in your fireplace or wood-burning stove
  • When visiting family and friends be prepared for possible reactions to everything from pets to perfume, and make sure to bring your SinuSense™ sinus wash , any necessary medication, and an allergy action plan in case of emergencies
  • Limit (or eliminate) scented candles, potpourri, air fresheners, and plant arrangements
