Clinical Research Finds Waterpik® Water Flosser Significantly More Effective Than Sonicare® Air Floss

Waterpik® Water Flosser Proven 70% More Effective at Removing Plaque, 80% More Effective in Reducing Gingivitis

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (February 1, 2012) – With the recent introductions of new oral care tools that claim to make flossing easier, it can be confusing to determine which is the most effective. A recently published study now proves that the Waterpik® Water Flosser comes out on top. The study, published in The Journal of Clinical Dentistry (January 2012), shows that the Waterpik® Water Flosser is significantly more effective than the Sonicare® Air Floss at removing plaque and reducing gingivitis.1 The study was conducted by BioSci Research Canada, Ltd

During the four-week study, the 82 participating subjects were given the Waterpik® Water Flosser or Sonicare® Air Floss, plus a manual toothbrush, to use as part of their daily oral care routine. Clinical results illustrated that the Waterpik® Water Flosser was 80% more effective than Sonicare® Air Floss for overall gingivitis reduction and also 70% more effective for overall plaque removal.

"It's well known that tooth brushing needs to be accompanied by a form of flossing in order to clean interdentally and subgingivally, where plaque bacteria can quickly form, causing serious dental problems," said Dr. Naresh C. Sharma, the study's lead researcher. "I found the results to be very useful due to the significant difference between the two groups."

Plaque biofilm is a collection of bacteria that form complex, interactive colonies throughout the mouth, particularly in hard-to-reach areas between teeth and below the gum line, where it is difficult to remove. The removal of plaque biofilm is the basis of preventative dental health, as plaque is the leading cause of tooth decay and gum disease.

"Virtually anyone and everyone can benefit from using a Waterpik® Water Flosser," says Deborah Lyle, Water Pik, Inc.'s Director of Clinical Research. "The Water Flosser is unique in its ability to remove plaque from those areas that are typically missed by traditional brushing and flossing, thereby reducing the patient's risk for gum disease."

Water Pik, Inc. is committed to sponsoring high quality research studies that are conducted by universities and independent research facilities, and are published in peer-reviewed, professional journals. There are now 56 published clinical studies on the Waterpik® Water Flosser that demonstrate it is safe and effective, and can significantly improve oral health for people with braces, implants, crowns, bridges, and diabetes.

This new research builds upon the existing body of evidence that the Waterpik® Water Flosser is easier to use, more effective than traditional dental floss and more effective than Air Floss for removing plaque, reducing gingivitis and improving overall oral health. In fact, a recent survey finds that Waterpik® is the #1 brand of Water Flosser recommended by dental professionals to their patients.2

The study, Comparison of Two Power Interdental Cleaning Devices on the Reduction of Gingivitis, was conducted at BioSci Research Canada, Ltd. Study authors included: Naresh C. Sharma, BDS, DDS; Deborah M. Lyle, RDH; MS., Jimmy G. Qaqish, BSc; and Reinhard Schuller, MSc. To learn more about this study go to www.waterpik.com.
