Flossing

Flossing 101

According to the American Dental Association (ADA), you should use dental floss twice daily to remove debris and plaque between teeth.

Clinical studies show that when used properly, dental floss can improve oral health. But overly vigorous or incorrect flossing can also result in gum tissue damage.

How to Floss

For proper flossing, the ADA advises the following:

  1. Curve the floss against the side of the tooth in a 'C' shape
  2. Wipe the tooth from under the gumline (very gently) to the tip two or three times
  3. Repeat on adjacent and subsequent teeth

Most Americans Don’t Floss

Despite being told by dental professionals that flossing is absolutely imperative, most people do not floss. The ADA reports that only one-third of Americans floss regularly and only one-fifth do so correctly. The result is most Americans have some degree of gum disease that can result in bad breath, and eventually tooth loss.
