FAQs

Are Waterpik water flossers FSA or HSA eligible?
Expenses for preventing and treating dental diseases may be allowable for a Flex Spending Account (FSA), Health Savings Account (HSA), or Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA). This typically requires a Letter of Medical Necessity. Individual plans can vary, so it's best to verify eligibility with your plan administrator. Learn more
Can I use my water flosser when traveling abroad?

Plug-in corded models: Products listed as Global Voltage (100 - 240VAC, 60/50Hz) are universal voltage and dual voltage compatible. You need only a standard plug adapter to fit the local wall outlet if you plan to use the unit abroad.

USB rechargeable models: USB rechargeable units are Global Voltage compatible. You need your USB wall charger and plug adapter to fit the local wall outlet, or you can charge from a standard USB port as you would other USB rechargeable devices. Many travel plug adapters also include USB ports.

How do I clean my water flosser?

Clean your water flosser monthly for optimal performance:

  • Outside, Tip, & Handle: Wipe the exterior with a soft cloth and non-abrasive cleanser. Remove the tip and soak it (and handle for countertop models) in a vinegar-water mix (1:2) for 5 minutes.
  • Water Reservoir: Detach the reservoir. If it has a black valve, remove and clean it under warm water for 30-45 seconds. Place the reservoir in the dishwasher's top rack or hand-wash with warm soapy water. Air dry or skip heated drying. Reattach the valve (dome side up) if removed.
  • Inside: Run a vinegar-water mix (1:2) through the flosser, followed by clean warm water.
  • Replace tips every 3-6 months.

For additional details and an instructional video, see How to Clean a WATERPIK Water Flosser.

The flossing tip has broken off and is still in the handle, how do I remove it?

Method 1: Obtain a pointed, threaded metal screw. Insert the screw into the broken tip until wedged. Press tip eject button and remove the screw; the tip should come out with it.

Method 2: With water in the unit, point the tip/handle into sink. Press the tip eject button. Turn unit on with high pressure; the broken tip should dislodge.

Why is the water flosser pressure becoming weaker?

This issue is most commonly caused by: clogged tip, use of additives and lack of cleaning, or clogged reservoir vents (cordless handheld units).

Try the following:

  • Change the flossing tip
  • Clean the existing tip by soaking in solution of 50/50 vinegar and water and clear the tip with a sewing needle
  • If additives are used in your unit OR the unit has never been cleaned, do a deep clean with a 50/50 solution of warm water and vinegar and run through unit

To clear the vents (cordless handheld units):

  1. Detach the reservoir from the power handle
  2. Locate the small vent holes. For most cordless handheld units, they are located on the top of the detached reservoir. For the Cordless Advanced model, they are located on the unit, near the reservoir water straw connection.
  3. Carefully insert a needle into each hole to remove any blockage; use gentle pressure to avoid damage
Why is my countertop water flosser leaking?

Leaking from handle: Make sure the flossing tip is fully engaged into the handle (it should click firmly in place) or try a different tip. Inspect the handle for visible damage.

Leaking from reservoir: Leaks may be due to a loose reservoir, damaged seals, worn parts, or water left in the reservoir between uses. Make sure the reservoir is firmly seated when in use, and empty any remaining water after each use. Also, do not to use boiling water or a dishwasher's heated dry cycle when cleaning the reservoir.

Contact customer service if leaking continues. If the reservoir, handle, or other parts need to be replaced, please visit the Waterpik Online Store to purchase replacement parts.

I hear the motor on my unit turn on, but I get no water flow, what do I do?

If you have never cleaned your unit and are experiencing no water flow, we recommend trying a deep clean and possibly a gravity clean.

Deep clean: Follow the cleaning instructions, but use a 1:1 ratio of water to vinegar. If the 1:1 ratio does not solve the issue, try a gravity clean.

Gravity clean: Fill reservoir with 1:1 solution of warm water and vinegar. Place the handle in a sink and let the solution drain through. Gravity will allow the water to drain, but the handle must be at a lower point then the reservoir. This process will take about a half hour.

If water still does not flow after the deep clean and gravity clean, contact customer service.

My unit won't turn on, what should I do?

Try plugging the unit into a non-GFCI outlet (outside the bathroom or kitchen):

  • If it turns on and you've had the unit for some time, you may need to clean your device
  • If it turns on and you recently purchased the unit, you may need to use a single-outlet surge protector with the original outlet.
  • If it does not turn on while using a non-GFCI outlet, contact customer service.
What should I do if the water flosser is running but water does not flow (priming)?
If water does not flow, place the flossing tip in mouth and turn device to lowest setting. Draw on the tip as if it were a drinking straw. Also check for blockages and ensure the water reservoir is properly seated. If issues persist, consult the user manual or contact our customer service team.
How do I charge the ION Professional water flosser?

This unit requires a rapid charge of 5 hours prior to first use.

    1. The LED light will display a single, rapid blink every 3 seconds when the unit is fully charged and the charger is connected.
    2. A full charge will last for approximately 4 weeks of use. When the unit’s charge falls below 30% the charge indicator light will show 3 rapid blinks 8 times quickly after use to indicate that it needs to charged.
    3. Place the unit on the charger for 4-5 hours once every 3-4 weeks if used once a day and more often if used twice a day.
    4. If the unit is charging properly, the LED light will slowly glow from light to dim.
My ION Professional water flosser will not charge, what should I do?

First check the charger, outlet, and charging indicator for any issues.

If no issues are found, clean the charging contacts:

    1. Use a small cotton swab and apply a small amount of white vinegar
    2. Rub both sides of the magnetic charging contacts on the base of the unit
    3. Also clean the charger where it connects to the unit with the white vinegar
    4. Allow the unit to fully dry before plugging it back in
    5. Plug the unit into charge for a full, uninterrupted 6 hours

If the unit still does not charge, contact customer service.

How do the charging indicators work on the ION Professional water flosser?

    LED charging indicators:

    • Flashing Blue - Unit is fully charged
    • Glowing Blue (while charging) - Unit is actively charging
    • 3 Quick Blinks - Unit is approaching a low battery level (30%) charge
