Objective

To evaluate the efficacy of the new Waterpik Promax water flosser paired with a manual toothbrush compared to manual toothbrushing alone on the reduction of bleeding after six weeks.

Methodology

In a randomized, single-blind, 6-week clinical trial, 105 participants were assigned to one of three groups:

  • Group 1: Manual brushing + Promax at setting 9
  • Group 2: Manual brushing + Promax at setting 3
  • Group 3: Manual brushing only

All participants brushed twice daily with fluoride toothpaste and refrained from using other interdental aids or mouthrinses. Bleeding on probing (BOP), Modified Gingival Index (MGI), and Rustogi Modified Navy Plaque Index (RMNPI) were measured at baseline, 1, 4, and 6 weeks.

Results

  • All groups showed statistically significant improvements from baseline to week 6. No adverse events were found.
  • The Waterpik Promax water flosser at setting 9 was significantly more effective at reducing bleeding, inflammation, and plaque than either Promax at setting 3 or manual brushing only.
  • At setting 9, 80% of Promax users reduced their level of gingival bleeding to less than 10%. The American Academy of Periodontology defines periodontal health as having less than 10% bleeding.*

Conclusion

Daily use of the Waterpik Promax water flosser at setting 9 combined with manual brushing significantly reduces bleeding, enabling most users to reach periodontal health in six weeks.

Clinical results chart showing Waterpik Promax significantly reduces gingival bleeding in 6 weeks compared to brushing alone, with 8 in 10 users restoring gum health.
